Our research is highly interdisciplinary, combining theoretical and experimental insights from psychology, neuroscience, computer science, musicology, music therapy, and education.

Music from the Start

We investigate how music shapes human behaviour from the earliest stages of life. Using EEG and motion capture in the Goldsmiths InfantLab, we study how infants perceive, move to, and socially engage with music. This work explores the foundations of musical perception, emotion regulation, and early social interaction.

Music, Emotion, and Beauty

We study why music feels emotional and meaningful, and what makes certain experiences profoundly beautiful. Combining behavioural methods, psychophysiology, EEG, and immersive virtual reality, we examine musical emotion. memory, and aesthetic experience in real-world contexts.

We explore how the brain and body coordinate perception, action, and creativity during musical performance. Using neuroscientific and computational approaches, we study timing, motor control, learning, expertise, flow, and performance anxiety. This work bridges laboratory neuroscience with real-world practice.

We study how streaming platforms, social media, and generative AI are transforming music diffusion, innovation, and consumption worldwide. Combining large-scale cross-cultural experiments with big music data, we examine how psychology and technology interact to shape global music behaviour.

The Psychology of Music Appreciation

We study the psychological basis of music appreciation by combining behavioural, physiological, and neuroimaging methods.

We study how children learn to understand musical expression, focusing on embodied representations of music and cross-modal processing of emotion cues in music, movement, and stories.

Cognitive Neuroscience of Music Performance

Music Performance

We combine neuroscientific and performance data with computational modelling to understand the behavioural, cognitive, and neurobiological processes underlying music performance anxiety.

Music Cognition Research on Big Data

Music and Big Data

We study global patterns of musical behaviour in real-time by analysing big data from music platforms (e.g., Shazam, YouTube) with machine learning and computational techniques.

Music Cognition Research in Cultural Evolution of Music and the Arts

Cultural Evolution of Music 

We simulate the cultural evolution of music by running cultural transmission experiments in musical and creative modalities, such as singing or tapping.
