Exploring the dynamics of flow state episodes

SCAPA Invited Speaker Series 2024-25

12 Dec 2024

Oliver Durcan

Goldsmiths, University of London

Abstract

Flow states are characterised by heightened absorption, a sense of fluent and effortless control over actions, and increased enjoyment during skilled activities. While most research often treats flow as a singular, static experience, an increasingly emerging approach examines it as a dynamic process with distinct phases. This lecture will explore studies that investigate changes within flow state episodes, focusing on how they emerge, sustain, and resolve. I will also highlight transferable yet underutilised methodologies from related fields and share insights from my ongoing research. The lecture aims to offer a deep understanding of the dynamic nature of flow states.
